Last Week in Natural Gas

The November contract shed 3.2% on the week to settle Friday at $3.116, and the path there was a two-way grind. Monday eased 1.6% before Tuesday ripped 3.7% on the tightening storage story and Gulf Coast LNG terminals running near capacity. Wednesday gave back 2.6%. Thursday’s EIA release printed a +67 Bcf injection for the week ending October 9, well short of the roughly +76 Bcf the market expected, and the contract firmed 1.2% on the miss. Total working gas reached 3,567 Bcf, just 45 Bcf (1.3%) above the 2021-25 average and 143 Bcf (3.9%) below a year ago, with the Pacific region already posting a 5 Bcf draw. The bullish storage read did not hold. Friday’s 3.7% slide, the largest move of the week, came as mild two-week weather maps and fading powerburn undercut the . Overhead, keeps building: the July-September of +2.16 points to a warm northern heating core this winter, and that is why front-end rallies keep getting sold.

The Week Ahead

Thursday, October 22 brings the EIA report for the week ending October 16, and the setup favors another injection trailing the seasonal norm, with production still below its one-year high and LNG pinned at the top of its range. A second straight undershoot pushes the over the five-year average toward zero just as injection season winds down. The bigger date is Wednesday, October 28, when November expires. The curve sits in steep into December and January, so a full is already built in and the market needs actual cold to defend it. Spot is showing the opposite: mild northern weather and softer power demand. Watch the 8-14 day maps all week. The El Niño template favors a mild north, but seasonal guidance has turned colder and stormier for the South-Central and East, and a mid-winter disruption remains the upside tail. Global pull is the floor: European and Asian gas trades at many multiples of with Qatari supply disrupted, so every Gulf Coast train keeps running full. Ranges hold until weather picks a side.

In Plain English

Natural gas prices slipped last week, ending about 3% lower, even though the latest government data showed the country is adding gas to storage more slowly than usual for this time of year. Supplies are now only slightly above normal for mid-October and below where they stood a year ago, while gas shipped overseas is flowing close to full capacity because buyers in Europe and Asia are paying far more than Americans do. What is holding prices back is the weather. A strong El Niño, a warming of Pacific Ocean waters that tends to bring milder winters to the northern United States, could keep heating bills in check. A cold snap in the South or East would change that quickly.
